Summary

Only a very small portion of Earth’s surface has the right soil and conditions to grow food. This lesson uses an apple-slicing demonstration to show how little cultivatable land is available and why topsoil is a limited resource. Students discuss how soil can be lost or damaged through issues like erosion, pollution, and development, and describe conservation steps to protect it. Optional math questions help connect soil loss to real-world costs.
