Summary

Hands-on soil science activity that explains what soil is made of and how soils form in different places. Students learn the four main soil components and the five soil-forming factors, then use a brownie recipe as an analogy for parent material, organic matter, topography, climate, and time. Includes a map-based guessing game comparing soil profiles from different regions and discussion questions about how to turn sand into healthy soil.
