Summary

Soil color can reveal clues about what a soil is made of and the conditions it formed in. This activity explains why soils range from red to dark brown to gray, linking color to minerals, organic matter, and how much oxygen and water the soil receives. Students practice describing soils, then classify samples using a simplified Munsell color chart with hue, value, and chroma. Optional extensions include outdoor sampling and simple soil-based art projects.
