Summary

This activity models how ocean surface currents move and how they help mix warm and cold water. Students use a pan of water with floating herbs and a straw to create “wind,” then observe how water flow changes when it meets the pan’s edges, like currents meeting landmasses. By adding hot water to cold water and measuring temperatures before and after, they see how mixing changes water temperature and can calculate the amount of change. Students then label the general global flow of currents on a world map.
