Summary
Classroom lesson for middle schoolers that shows how county government affects daily life through schools, roads, courts, sheriffs, emergency services, animal shelters, and trash services. Students play the online simulation game “Counties Work,” acting as a county executive who collects tax revenue, balances a budget, responds to citizen requests, and handles crises while trying to stay popular enough to be re-elected. Includes reflection questions on tradeoffs and community priorities.
