Turfgrass Selection: Centipedegrass
If you have questions about this resource, contact your county Extension office.
Summary
Centipedegrass is a low-maintenance warm-season turf that stays light green and needs little nitrogen. It spreads slowly by stolons, tolerates drought, and handles some shade, but has limited cold hardiness, shallow roots, and does poorly in alkaline soils or heavy traffic. The guide explains centipedegrass decline and why mowing too low or overfertilizing can cause spring dieback. It compares common strains and improved varieties such as AU Centennial, Oklawn, TennTurf, and TifBlair, the main sod option in Tennessee.
