Understanding Cost of Gain and Value of Gain in Cattle
If you have questions about this resource, contact your county Extension office.
Summary
An important part of growing cattle on pasture or with mechanically harvested feedstuffs is knowing the cost of gain (COG) and the value of gain (VOG). The cost of gain is the cost of adding one pound of weight while the value of gain is the value received for putting on one pound of weight. It is imperative cattle growers know how to calculate COG and VOG and how they work together to influence profitability.
