Summary

A common question the University of Tennessee Extension receives is whether it is safe to land apply biosolids or “human waste”. Biosolids are not “human waste”; biosolids are treated sewage sludge that originate from the solids settling and biological treatment processes required at municipal wastewater treatment plants. This publication presents the regulatory structure used in Tennessee to ensure that biosolids are not a source of pathogen bacteria that could harm human health or livestock.
