Perhaps the most common question the University of Tennessee Extension receives from agricultural producers considering the land application of biosolids is a fear that “heavy metals” will permanently lower agricultural productivity. This publication introduces the potential human health and agricultural productivity impact of heavy metals in land applied biosolids and presents the regulatory mechanisms used to prevent negative health and productivity impacts of land applying biosolids.
