Summary
Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) is a highly contagious respiratory disease among the poultry population with high avian mortality, creating significant economic losses and elevated costs for disease control and outbreak eradication. The following HPAI response goals and depopulation policies were developed by USDA- APHIS and released on July 16, 2026. Every poultry producer (backyard and commercial) should become familiar with the USDA’s HPAI response goals and depopulation policies.
