Summary

Ruminococcus bacteria are common microbes in cattle that help break down fibrous forages in the rumen. As they ferment plant cell walls, they produce volatile fatty acids that cattle absorb for energy, including butyrate. Butyrate supports growth and reproduction and helps regulate inflammation and immune function, contributing to healthier rumen and reproductive tract environments. Understanding these microbes can help producers support nutrition and herd health.
