If you have questions about this resource, contact your county Extension office.
Summary
A hands-on 4-H science activity that helps middle and high school students understand topography and how a 3-D landscape is shown on a flat map. Using play-dough, a clear container, and measured water additions, students create contour lines that represent equal elevations and see how line spacing shows steep versus flat areas. The lesson includes discussion prompts, a landform vocabulary list, and an extension using real local USGS topographic maps.
