Summary

Equine pre‑purchase evaluation is a veterinary assessment designed to help buyers make informed decisions before purchasing a horse. The evaluation is customized based on the buyer’s expectations and intended use of the horse and is best performed with the buyer present. The basic exam includes a complete physical assessment, evaluation for previous injuries or surgeries, inspection of the eyes, heart, lungs, mouth, gait analysis for lameness, and a limited neurologic exam at rest and in motion. Optional advanced diagnostics include upper airway endoscopy (at rest or during exercise), objective lameness detection using motion sensors, radiographs of key joints, blood work to identify underlying disease, and drug testing to detect medications that may mask pain or lameness. The goal is to identify current health concerns and potential risks that could affect future performance.
