Summary

Importance and components of a complete equine oral exam, emphasizing that teeth floating alone is not sufficient for proper dental care. Advances in equine dentistry allow veterinarians to address performance issues, malocclusions, periodontal disease, and painful conditions such as EOTRH affecting the front teeth. A thorough oral exam can be performed safely in the field or hospital with minimal stress and is recommended once yearly. Examination of the periodontium identifies gum disease, abnormal spaces between teeth, loose teeth, and internal tooth problems such as fractures or pulp disease. Early detection is critical, as horses often hide discomfort until disease is advanced, and routine exams help prevent pain, reduce costs, and support proper chewing and comfort.
