Summary

Equine carrot stretches are a series of exercises that use the horse’s natural movements to improve flexibility, core strength, balance, and spinal range of motion. By luring the horse with a carrot or similar treat, the horse performs controlled rounding (flexion), hollowing (extension), and lateral bending of the neck and back. Each stretch is done voluntarily and should never be forced to avoid injury. The document emphasizes safety, including proper footing, correct handler positioning, use of an assistant, and performing stretches when the horse is warm, ideally after exercise. Detailed instructions describe lateral neck bends, bowing stretches, sternum lifts, lumbosacral lifts (butt tucks), and extension exercises, along with repetition guidelines. Carrot stretches may be used for conditioning, injury prevention, and rehabilitation when recommended by a veterinarian.
