Summary
Canine iron parameters used by the UTCVM Clinical Pathology Service to identify iron‑restricted erythropoiesis and related causes of anemia in dogs. It describes absolute iron deficiency, most often caused by chronic blood loss, and iron sequestration associated with inflammation. The fact sheet outlines the diagnostic value of reticulocyte indices—particularly reticulocyte hemoglobin content (CHr)—and plasma iron measures including iron, total iron‑binding capacity (TIBC), and percent saturation. Expected laboratory patterns for iron deficiency, inflammation, and other conditions are discussed, along with specimen requirements, result interpretation, and limitations of reference intervals.
